The Syntax of Visual Language
A practical framework for understanding how visual art works.
This system has been the focus of Walter Lee Schofield’s work since he first discovered it in 1971.
Just like spoken language, visual art is built from parts. These parts interact to create meaning, clarity, and impact. The Syntax of Visual Language teaches you how to see those parts, understand what they’re doing, and use them with intention to communicate effectively.
Once learned, artists begin to make deliberate choices. The Syntax often leads artists to either refine the balance and clarity of their work or break structure entirely. Both options are valid when done intentionally.
It’s not about style. It’s about communicating clearly and deliberately through visual language.
Learning the Syntax involves developing control over a set of Elements and Expressions.
The Elements
The raw material of all visual work:
Negative Space – the empty space which surrounds value. The nothing surrounding the something
Point – dot, speck, point, etc… One or several points can be used to tell a story
Line – more than a dot, a line can do even more
Shape – 2D shapes without full form
Form – shapes with deptch and more 3D
Texture – surface quality
Value – the positive space
Color – hue, temperature, intensity
Theme – the underlying idea or subject that guides the work
The Expressions
How the elements behave and create meaning:
Unity – one.
Balance (symmetrical) – balance with mirrored symmetry
Balance (asymmetrical) – dynamic balance without mirrored symmetry
Repetition – recurring elements
Pattern – structured repetition
Transition – change or shift between elements
Tension – visual pressure or unresolved energy
Emphasis – what stands out
Contrast – difference and separation
Variety – intentional chaos
